The Novosibirsk State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, also known as NOVAT, was founded in 1945. The largest theatre building in Russia and the USSR was constructed in 1931-1941. It is a unique architect complex, possessing the status of the cultural heritage of the Russian Federation.
The ticket office and the entrance hall are situated on the ground floor. The concert auditorium is on the first and the second floors. The main auditorium of the theatre has a round shape and is enclosed with round foyers. The principal construction of the theatre building is the dome which is 60m wide and 35m high. The dome is unique, because it supports itself without columns and buttresses.
The average thickness of the dome is 8cm, the ratio of the thickness to the dome radius is less than that of a chicken egg. The dome is big enough for the Moscow Bolshoi Theate to be fit inside. The main auditorium seats 1774 spectators. The total area of the premises is 40,663m2, the volume of the building is 294,340m3. The theatre is called the Siberian Coliseum for its size. The Opera and Ballet Theatre is considered to be the most well-equipped theatre in Russia after the reconstruction in 2005.
The repertoire of the Opera and Ballet Theatre includes such well-known operas and ballets as Giselle, Spartacus, Don Quixote, Eugene Onegin, La traviata, Carmen, Prince Igor and of course the famous Swan Lake. The troupe includes 76 laureates and prize-winners of Russian and international competitions and 32 recipients of different titles. The theatre has won numerous prizes at Russian and international festivals.
Tickets can be bought in the foyer of the Opera and Ballet Theatre and on its website. The price varies from 500 to 5000 rub.
